Five Tips for Summertime Skincare

If you’ve caught yourself rummaging through your car for sunglasses and sunscreen, you may have noticed the weather is beginning to warm up. Little glimpses of summer are just starting to peek through the clouds and just like in the wintertime, it’s wise to look at your skincare routine and make the appropriate adjustments. From sun damage to dehydration, the summer months can present unique challenges when it comes to skincare. But fear not, we have a few simple tips and tricks. You can keep your skin looking and feeling healthy all summer long. Grab your sunscreen and let’s dive in!

1. Review your sun protection regime:

One of the best tips we can recommend is to wear protective clothing and seek shade/indoor activities during the peak sun hours (typically 10 AM to 4 PM). This may conjure up visions of head-to-toe rash guards or pants, but there are many stylish and modern sun protection options, including brands like Albion and Athleta. You can opt for a long sleeve swimsuit and pair it with a linen wrap skirt for something breathable and still protective. It’s also essential to choose a sunscreen that has real staying power. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (find the Elta MD brand here at Renew; we love it for it’s smooth, non-grainy texture) with a minimum of SPF30. Apply it regularly every two hours. You can also add a brush-on sunscreen like Colorescience Sunforgettable over your makeup for additional protection.

2. Increase hydration:

With the combination of warm weather and increased outdoor activities, it’s all too easy to become dehydrated quickly which affects your skincare. The good news is you can put those trendy Stanley cups to good use and get your recommended water intake by setting an alarm on your phone. Try to create measurable goals by dividing your recommended water intake by the hours in the day and setting reminders to be sure you hit those markers. Being dehydrated can cause your skin to look dull and dry and can negatively impact your application of makeup and sunscreen. Instead, look for a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid to help your skin maintain that moisture barrier (we recommend browsing the ZO line for some great choices).

3. Include exfoliation as part of your routine:

Because summer months bring an increase in sweating, oil production, and buildup of sunscreen, it’s essential to exfoliate to keep your pores clear. Doing this regularly helps remove the dead skin cells and dirt/bacteria that can cause breakouts. It will also help your skin feel smoother overall. Here at Renew Medical Spa, we offer extensive exfoliation services that can improve your overall skin texture and tone. Our two-step process includes extractions and is the optical choice to speed up your skin cell turnover and reduce pore size. Typically, our providers recommend 3-6 treatments. You’ll be left with a glowing complexion and more confidence as you prepare for lots of days by the pool.

4. Botox® and Fillers for a little extra boost:

With a rise in social occasions during the summer months (hello, graduations, baby showers, and brunches), it can be the perfect time to try out Botox® and fillers. Even if you’ve been hesitant in the past, it’s good to understand the goal of Botox® and fillers is to enhance your natural beauty. A skilled and experienced injector can achieve subtle, natural-looking results that enhance your features and make you look and feel more confident. Additionally, Botox® and fillers are minimally invasive treatments that require little to no downtime during the busy summer months. If you have questions or want more information, our providers can answer inquiries through your free consultation anytime.

5. Try a facial mist:

This may not be something you’ve incorporated into your skincare routine before but during the summer months, a facial mist can help keep your skin moist and hydrated. Look for a facial mist that contains hydrating ingredients like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid. You can also choose a mist that has additional benefits, such as antioxidants or soothing ingredients like chamomile or lavender. To use a facial mist, simply spritz it onto your face throughout the day as needed. You can also use it as a toner after cleansing your skin in the morning or evening. Not only does it provide a boost of hydration, but it can also help to set your makeup and give your skin a healthy, glowing appearance. It’s also simple enough to use that even those who don’t wear makeup can add it into their morning schedule (try the Epionce balancing toner, which doesn’t need to be rinsed and can be used as a facial mist).Taking care of your skin during the summer months is essential to maintain its health and youthful appearance. At Renew, you can find a range of skincare treatments and products that can help protect and nourish your skin, while addressing specific concerns and enhancing your natural beauty.
